I think our saving grace will be that it is a minority government
In the meantime I'm gonna parade my genderbending husband around queen's park and smoke my cigarettes on his front lawn
I've been thinking about sending him a personal thank you card for supporting my disabled self while I'm out of work, given that I know he just loves helping less fortunate Canadians.
We've just elected a Prime Minister who is supportive of American right wing politics and has very socially conservative values.
To give you an idea of the problem, this is a quote from a speech he made to the American Council for National Policy in 1997 (his views haven't changed much since):
"...your country, and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world." [link]
The Washington Post commented on the election in December, saying (among opther things):
"Why does President Bush hope Christmas comes a little late this year? Because on Jan. 23, Canada may elect the most pro-American leader in the Western world. Free-market economist Stephen Harper, leader of the opposition Conservative Party, is pro-free trade, pro-Iraq war, anti-Kyoto, and socially conservative. Move over Tony Blair: If elected, Mr. Harper will quickly become Mr. Bush's new best friend internationally and the poster boy for his ideal foreign leader." [link]
I think you can probably see the problem here.
His party has a minority government at least, so if we're lucky the opposition parties will be able to keep him from doing anything too drastic. It's interesting that you mention wars for oil and domination, as Harper has openly said that he believed we should have been involved in the conflict in Iraq and "War on Terrorism" regardless of the fact that the majority of Canadians are strictly opposed to it.
He is also uninterested in the needs of minorities, the values and opinions of the white Christian middle class male population are much more important to him and his party members. Intolerance is apparently a good Christian family value, according to these people.
We have turned governments over that we felt weren't accurately representing the Canadian people a few times in the past, our parliament generally works well that way. So I think we should be safe but it is a bit uncertain at this point and I'm not happy to have him, or his party, leading my government.

oh geez...I'm so sorry
Stay safe.

Thank you.
Sorry to hear that the election didn't go as you expected.
Hopefully the bill or whatever won't be passed by parliament.
