Is anyone else participating in the UF group tournament?
My old junky computer is broken again, and just when I need to be working on my entry for the first round.

So I'm typing this on my mom's office computer while I'm working on mine. I did manage to get it to boot at least now but probably won't be able to do much with it until I get my new hard drive later in the week. Then I'll have to do some more work setting everything back up, I'm hoping to get Debian running as well so I will probably only have a few days to get my entry finished. That's if everything goes well, it's going to be really tight.
I usually spend days or weeks on UF stuff but I guess it will be easier to get it done with the formula and colouring restrictions just because I won't have as many options to play with. I am a bit disappointed in the restrictions just because 3 out of the 4 colourings we have are all fairly similar... There are a lot of formulas to choose from but for example, a whole lot of them are slope formulas but we can't use any lighting colouring so slope is a wasted formula option. (lighting + slope = cool 3d effects) It's great having all of those formulas, Gilles Nadeau is a great author but it's pretty useless if we can't really take advantage of them and use them as they were intended to be used. The three colourings that are fairly similar are all basically gnarly orbit traps with a few different options on each, the last colouring we have to work with is fbm, standard overused uf texturing formula. The orbit trap formulas have fbm texture built in already so that's almost entirely wasted as well. I guess it's supposed to be more challenging but I don't feel as though we're doing Gilles justice if we can't really use his formulas and show their real power. I will do my best anyway, I have some ideas that I think are decent.

The computer..... I needed a new drive and am getting a good deal on it anyway, plus the new one will give me tons more space. The old one is just a 40 gb... If you hadn't guessed already my computer is sort of like Frankenstein's monster, just a bunch of parts thrown together in an old case. It fits my budget though and suits my purposes pretty nicely. For some reason my computers always run without any trouble for a long time but when they do break it's totally catastrophic. I just replaced the PSU a few weeks ago so the hard drive is right on schedule really.

On a more positive note:
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, I hope everyone had a good one.

Belated Happy Thanksgiving Tryst!
Glad it's [thanksgiving]over and back to normal!
I do not like Windows, but Windows has the drivers, blah blah blah.
Just wish they would FIX Windows. Instead (FIX) F.IX - R.EPAIR - D. AILY.
I am scared every time I update.
