Description

Finally done. Ultra Fractal 4, 21 layers and masks using only formulas and colouring algorithms by Gilles Nadeau. Levels, resizing, sharpening, border and text were done in Photoshop.

This is very experimental for me. Usually I cling to very structured work, one formula and the same location on nearly every layer with different colouring methods to keep everything strictly under control. This one was entirely different. I was on a tight deadline and broke all of my own conventions. I wanted to create a more chaotic abstract piece but still keep some familiar realism. I wanted to make a real tribute to Gilles Nadeau, not just use his formulas, so I studied his work and parameters I found on the dB to get a feel for his art. I found out that Gilles is a Canadian artist so when I was doing my own exploration with his formulas and found something I thought looked vaguely like an evergreen tree on a hill, I knew it was what I was looking for. I looked at more references, work by Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven and Canadian nature photography for more ideas. It finally came together, more like painting than anything I've ever done in UF before.

I'm still a bit unsettled with it because I had to go far out of my comfort zone to do it so I think I'm pleased but don't know how to react to it, or how other people will react to it. Plus it's a contest entry for a difficult challenge and I have some tough competition in the very first round. Sorry to ramble in the description, I wanted to give some context. I'm really just happy it's over with.
